This past August we had the opportunity to experience what the BMW Ultimate Driving Experience was all about. This
event/tour allows anybody to experience new model BMW cars in a safe and professional environment. The tour
visits 10 cities across the United States where participants get a chance to drive an autocross course, do street
drives, experience dynamic drives, and for teens there is a teen driving school course, all of this for free.
The event was everything you can expect from BMW: Well organized, very professional, informative and lots of fun.
We were signed up for the autocross and our youngest member (age 20) gave it a go at the teen driving school.
The autocross started with a short theory class on safety and advanced driving, and then it was off to apply what we
had just learned on the track. There a BMW professional driving instructor showed us driving techniques, throttle
and brake control and of course the best line to take for a fast lap time. The driving instructors were very well
qualified with most of them having competed in a professional racing series at some time in their careers. The
autocross course was a 2-hour driving session that included one reconnaissance lap, maybe 4 practice laps and a final
all-out timed lap. You could drive a 3 series, a 4 series or the X4 (we got stuck with the X4) which was rather
impressive in cornering but of course a little on the heavy side and slow for an autocross event. At the end of the
session they had a mini award ceremony for the fastest times, and not to brag but worth mentioning I was surprised
to find out I was the fastest time for our session.
The Teen Driving School was excellent, what teen wouldn’t like to go and drive the heck out of someone else’s BMW.
Our teen driver got to drive and slide the agile and lightweight 228i Coupe. This two-hour course is for drivers under
21 with a valid permit or license and focuses on distracted driving dangers like texting and driving. They also get a
short introduction to dynamic driving like braking, accident avoidance and slide recovery on a wet and soapy skidpad.
The course is free and when completed the participants get a certificate of completion.
